Yalda Moayeri is well-known photojournalist who was arrested on September 20, 2022, for covering protests after Mahsa Amini was murdered by the morality police. Moayeri was taken to Qarchak Prison near Tehran, which is known for squalid, inhumane conditions and the brutality of its guards.
After her arrest, she provided IranWire with an audio recording about the situation in this notorious women’s prison.
“We are not safe here,” she said. “The situation is very bad; there are fights and beatings every day.
“A crowd of more than 100 people has been thrown into a sports hall without facilities and without ventilation. The bathrooms are dire and people are regularly sedated.”
Moayeri is a member of the Iranian Press Photographers Association and one of several journalists to have been arrested since protests began on September 16.
